BP oil spill classified ad

PUBLIC NOTICE In accordance with the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (33 USC § 2714(c)) (”OPA”), please be advised of the following information: A well, which is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 in the Gulf of Mexico and had been drilled by the mobile offshore drilling unit DEEPWATER HORIZON, has been named as the source of an oil discharge that commenced around 10:00 pm CDT on or about April 20, 2010. This spill impacted the Mississippi Canyon area, and continues to potentially affect the Gulf Coast of the United States. As the spill is ongoing, the quantity of oil involved is undetermined. BP Exploration & Production Inc. (”BP Exploration”) is accepting claims for certain uncompensated damages and removal costs caused by the spill. Costs and damages that may be compensated pursuant to OPA include removal costs; damage to or loss to real or personal property; loss of subsistence use of natural resources; loss of government revenues; loss of profits and earnings capacity; and damages for net costs of providing increased public services. BP Exploration has established a toll-free, hotline number for claims: 1-800-440-0858. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The claims procedure is as follows: Personnel at the call center will provide each caller with information on how to submit a claim. Each claim will be assigned to an adjuster, and the claim will be promptly investigated and evaluated. Claims for lost income or lost profits will be evaluated promptly. The adjuster will require some substantiation of income impacted by the spill, but will make reasonable effort to keep the documentation requirements to a minimum. Reasonable effort will also be made to act on lost income claims within 48 hours of receipt. Larger and more complex claims may require additional investigation and documentation prior to evaluation and resolution. Resolved claims will be paid promptly. Claims may be presented for interim, short-term damages representing less than the full amount to which the claimant ultimately may be entitled. Please note that payment of such claims shall not preclude recovery for damages not reflected in the paid or settled partial claims. Any claims that are denied or that are not resolved within 90 days after the date of submission to the BP Exploration claims representative may be submitted to the US COAST GUARD STOP 7100 (ca), 4200 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 1000, Arlington, Virginia 20598-7100 for consideration. Toyota recall advertisement fails miserably

Toyota recall Ad

Toyota recall Ad

How much you want to bet a 20-something New York creative team put this ad together? And they probably do not even own cars…

Sorry, in an ad about unintended acceleration the words “temporary” and “pause” are not good choices. And the pause button graphic (yeah, that’s what the dark box with the sideways “=” is supposed to look like) is really just confusing in an auto ad.

Toyota, we do not care why you have stopped your plants. That’s not the issue. We care about our cars and our passenger’s lives. This ad misses the point.

Customers and potential customers are looking for solid facts about this issue. After all, a stuck accelerator could mean a fiery death. Toyota should have run a much more information intensive ad… 1) Address the problem, not the symptom; 2) Tell us what you are going to do to our Toyota vehicles to fix the problem; and 3) Tell us your plans for a timeline to fix the problem.

People are passionate about their vehicles (except New Yorkers, which could explain the crappy ad). We will read hundreds of words about our second largest purchase. So, please explain what “fly-by-wire” is so drivers understand there is no throttle cable going from the gas pedal to the engine. Explain what you’re going to do: are you going to replace the accelerator’s electronic guts? install a new return spring? or shim the existing spring?

Overall, Toyota needs to divulge more info. Toyota should not treat customers and potential customers like we can’t handle the truth. This ad really contains no information, just says visit our website for more information…

A lack of information creates confusion. Confusion does not help your brand. This ad does not help Toyota or Toyota drivers. Fail.

P.S. And by the way, “unintended acceleration” is not the problem. It’s the unintended rapid deceleration that hurts.

Less is Really Less

Bad quarterly report for CC earlier this month, a 3,7 Billion loss. The loss was mostly due to a writedown of goodwill. Quarterly revenue was 1.4 Billion, with a B, compared to 1.8 Billion from the previous year.

McClatchey meanwhile reported a huge jump in earnings for the second quarter. Probably because they did all the cost-cutting and goodwill-writing-down last year. Still, overall ad revenue down a sickening 30%

Hell Freezes Over & Pigs Fly!!!

“McClatchy Will Pay Commissions to Ad Agencies in New Sales Strategy” says the headline on Editor & Publisher’s website.

Meanwhile, The White House, Warren Buffet and Google have all declined to bailout the newspaper industry this week… Let’s face it, the newspaper industry needs to stop being “the newspaper industry” and re-brand itself as what it really is… The Knowledge Industry. After all, no one buys the daily newspaper for the newsprint… you get it to learn something new and useful.
