Social media advertising ramps up

Last year, advertisers spent something like $2.5 billion dollars on social media advertising worldwide. It looks like we’ll push that figure to about $3.5 billion this year and more than $4 billion next year. Facebook will take nearly half of the US ad spend in this sector, nearly $1 billion.

Twitter accepting ads

My daughter tweets, I’ve integrated twitter stream to a couple of websites for clients and I actually Tweet certain news items now and then… So I’m a bit familiar. Last week I saw “sponsored tweets” for the first time. Now Twitter has formalized a paid Tweet program. Advertising Age has the rundown.

Facebook friends only coupons

How do you reward Facebook friends or followers when they “Like” your page? Build a Facebook friends-only coupon…

Over the past week, we’ve been able to code language that displays one image to “friends” and a different image to not-yet-friends on a Facebook page. So those who ‘like” you can get a coupon or special offer while others see an image that urges them to “Like” your page for access to special deals.

Bad Move, Fiat

Bad move, Fiat

Bad move, Fiat

Look, as a person, you’re allowed to be angry with BP. Environmental advocates, politicians, governors… they’re supposed to be angry. Fishermen, especially angry. Getting bitch-slapped by public opinion is known as negative reinforcement. Standard behavior modification technique.

But when you manufacture cars, it’s probably not a good idea to raise a stink over pollution. It’s just a wee bit hypocritical.

This is what we’re up against…

Cheapo websites

Cheapo websites

I am in the midst of fixing a so-called “cheap” website. Next time someone starts whining about my prices, I am just going to tell them that I charge even more for fixing mistakes made by amateurs. I will remind them of the “opportunity cost” concept. While that cheap website is sitting there doing absolutely nothing, a real website would be an investment, not an impulse purchase made because you drove by a sign on the side of the road…

Election 2010

Primary is August 24, 2010. I’m betting that inventory on broadcast TV, Country format radio, news/talk radio is going to be very tight in July & August statewide. You can also expect a massive online effort the week before the primary and a low level constant “vote early” drumbeat leading up to the primary.

Toyota gets it: better late than never

Toyota Recall Online Ad

Toyota Recall Online Ad

So this Toyota ad started showing up today… It looks like Toyota is beginning to get ahead of the curve. There is a decent amount of information now on Toyota’s recall site.

I just have to wonder how long Americans are going to allow them to get away with calling a shim a “Precision Steel Reinforcing Bar.” A shim by any other name is still just a shim.
