Univision Local media

Univision Communications Inc. announced that Peter Walker has been named to the newly created position of president of Univision Local Media, effective July 12, 2010. Walker, who spent 17 years at various leadership positions at the Tribune Company, will be based in New York and will report to Joe Uva, president and chief executive officer of Univision Communications Inc.

In his new role, Walker will oversee Univision Local Media, a newly created division which reflects the realignment of all operations and sales for Univision’s local television stations, Univision Radio and local interactive properties into one division. He will work closely with David Lawenda, president of Advertising Sales and Marketing, to coordinate and align local and national sales efforts, as well as with Alina Falcon, president of Univision News, to streamline local programming operations.

Beasley profits from cuts

A business has two options for boosting profit: it can either increase revenue, or decrease cost. Beasly Broadcast Group Inc. went with the latter choice in this year’s first quarter, managing to post a slightly positive net income despite declining revenue.
Indeed, net revenues were down 3.2% relative to the first quarter of 2009, a $0.7 million decrease. Six of the company’s 11 so-called market clusters saw declines, the company said in a release. From Gulf Coast Business.

SBS radio stations pull PPM encoders

According to MediaWeek magazine,

Spanish Broadcasting System has pulled the encoders from its stations again, leaving its ratings performance in the dark for advertisers. The broadcaster disconnected from Arbitron’s portable people meter system soon after a New York Supreme Court judge lifted the February temporary restraining order that required SBS to continuing encoding nine stations in five PPM markets.

South Florida Sports Animal sales staff has something to be happy about as 940AM picks up Miami Dolphins broadcast rights. How long until this relationship causes Clear Channel to remove the “Thong of the Day,” “Babe of the Day” and “Wet on the Net” links from their home page?

Election 2010

Primary is August 24, 2010. I’m betting that inventory on broadcast TV, Country format radio, news/talk radio is going to be very tight in July & August statewide. You can also expect a massive online effort the week before the primary and a low level constant “vote early” drumbeat leading up to the primary.
